Pcs Set
I bought a switch and connected 3 pcs to it. How can I set the pcs in a LAN, and then to the Internet?
I have just bought a D-link 8 port switch. I connected to it 3 PCs, all running Windows XP, one having a printer connected to it. Now, how would I go about setting up a LAN, so I can have file sharing among the PCs and make them all print on the same printer. Suppose, I wanted next to connect the LAN to the internet, what do I need (hardware, software, setup steps) to do that? How can I manage the IP problem in the latter case. If you can point me to somple files explaining the basics of practical Windows networking, I would appreciate it.
Go into your network setting on each computer and set the ip address to 192.168.1.1, .2, .3 then leave the gateway ddress blank and set in 255.255.255.0 for the subnet mask. This will get them all talking to each other. When it comes to getting them out on the network you need a router (not really you could use usb into one of the computers and use internet connection sharing software but this is hard to set up and not reliable). Once you get the router plugged into the modem set the desktops to configure network settings dynamically from a dhcp server. The router will act like a dhcp server. You can use any ip addresses you want behind your router but i reccomend the 192.168.1.xxx subnet as it is no routable.
